Prince's Trust Canada and Marriott International partnership to support youth employment in Vancouver

VANCOUVER, BC: Prince’s Trust Canada, a national charity established by HRH The Prince of Wales, and Marriott International, a leading global lodging company with more than 7,000 properties under 30 leading brands spanning 132 countries and territories have expanded their Canadian Get Into Hospitality youth employment program to Vancouver.

The program will provide underemployed and underserved youth with classroom-based employability skills training, relevant industry certifications and fully paid job shadowing training at Vancouver area hotels including the JW Marriott Parq Vancouver, Marriott Vancouver Pinnacle Downtown, the Delta Hotels By Marriott Vancouver Suites, and the Westin Bayshore.

Get Into is a sector-specific national youth employment program run by Prince’s Trust Canada. It links young people facing barriers to employment with employers who are ready to hire and make a difference in the communities they serve. In the Fall of 2018, The Trust partnered with Marriott International to create the Get Into Hospitality program.

“Over the past year we’ve seen the great success of the partnership in Toronto, Calgary and Ottawa,” said Sharon Broughton, CEO of Prince’s Trust Canada. “We’re looking forward to bringing that success to British Columbia and helping even more young people build their confidence and get jobs.”

In addition to supporting young people into employment, the hospitality-focused curriculum and paid workplace experience is growing the hospitality talent pool nationally. Globally, the hospitality industry is expected to support 126 million jobs over the next ten years, causing the demand for talent to outpace talent supply.

“The Get Into Hospitality program has already played a role helping prepare young people for careers in our industry across Canada and I’m excited about the opportunities this partnership will bring to Vancouver,” said Don Cleary President, Marriott International, Canada. “In addition to being an innovative approach to hiring, this partnership provides career and training opportunities to disadvantaged youth and reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to ‘putting people first’.”

The success of the national program is possible through collaborations with local youth employment organizations who meet the specific needs of each community. The Vancouver program is led in partnership with YMCA who provide valuable in-class skills training as well as wrap-around support for program participants.

The program runs from August 21st to September 18th, 2019 and is supported by the RBC Foundation, KPMG and the Herrendorf Family Foundation.
