Prince’s Trust Canada is proud to be supporting Indigenous communities as they work towards revitalizing and protecting their languages. We have undertaken numerous initiatives over the past few years and are excited to expand that work with another two projects underway for 2018-19.
Thanks to funding from the Department of Canadian Heritage, we will be expanding our Hospital Book Project and creating a book and author development pipeline with Nelson Canada.
The Hospital Book Project – Part II is an extension of a project funded in 2017 by the Department of Canadian Heritage. It will create eight books, audio and video in six different languages on medical topics of concern to Indigenous children in hospital or ill at home. Distribution will be handled by the Manitoba Children’s Hospital Foundation with recipient sites now extending into several provinces.
Our Indigenous Book and Author Development Pipeline project works with Nelson Canada, the largest educational textbook manufacturer in Canada. Indigenous authors and illustrators will be selected for mentorship through the book creation process. The colouring books they initially create will be in three languages and distributed through the networks of Teach for Canada, an organization that provides teachers to remote communities across northern Ontario. Over time, a creative and distribution pipeline will develop through this collaboration to provide an expanding and accessible catalogue for young Indigenous language learners.
To help support the delivery of these two exciting projects, we are thrilled to have Sam Hill join the organization as the new Project Manager for our Indigenous Languages Initiatives.
